World Osteoporosis Day celebrated at JP Hospital

JP Hospital, Rourkela, celebrated World Osteoporosis Day on 20th October 2023 to raise awareness about bone health. It is important to raise awareness about osteoporosis as it is a silent disease that weakens bones, making them more susceptible to fractures. The theme for this year is ‘Step Up For Bone Health- Build Better Bones’.

The World Osteoporosis Day celebration started with a two-day free orthopaedic consultancy organized by the JP Orthopedic Department along with a free Bone Mineral Density Test on the 19th & 20th of October. This was followed by an interactive event on October 20 at JP Dhanavantari Hall.
This event was attended by the CEO of JP Hospital Dr D K Mishra, Dr Biswajit Mohapatra OT Superintendent, Dr B K Kakkad Senior Consultant Medicine, Dr Debsish Panda Senior Consultant Critical Care, Dr R. N. Mahapatra Senior Consultant Neuro Surgeon, Dr Amaresh Pattanayak Senior Consultant Surgeon Urology along with other consultants, DNB Doctors, JP Nursing DNS, ANS and ward in-charges.

Dr Santosh Kumar Mohapatra, Sr. Consultant, JP Orthopedic Dept. opined that due to the adaptation of lethargic and luxurious lifestyles today by people around the world, their orthopaedic health is costing a lot. People have become dependent on vehicles and have stopped taking sunlight. Furthermore, he added the importance of bones in our lives. It holds our weight, helps us in physical movements and is the calcium storehouse of the body. The Sr. Consultant suggested people keep themselves away from fast food, especially cold drinks as they weaken the bone.

Dr. Sudhanshu Sekhar Das, Consultant- JP Hospital Rourkela said that osteoporosis is a silent epidemic disease which gets caused due to the absence or loss of calcium in our bodies thus making the bones hollow and light. This makes the bones prone to any kind of injury very easily and the bone can break even with the slightest of injury.

Dr. D. K. Mishra CEO was of the view that sedentary lifestyles nowadays lead to multiple health issues along with osteoporosis. Dr. Biswajit Mohapatra said that the self-healthcare regime will make one free from all diseases. According to Dr. B. K. Kakkad today children are spending lots of time inside rather than an outdoor life which has many health benefits. Hence health issues start early in today’s kids.
