In a groundbreaking medical intervention, Mr. Gurumit Singh, an 80-year-old diabetic from Odisha, has become the second oldest Indian to undergo stem cell therapy for severe peripheral vascular disease. This innovative procedure was performed free of cost under a state government scheme, making Mr. Singh the first recipient of this treatment in Odisha.

Peripheral Vascular Disease led to his diabetic foot, multiple non-healing ulcers, gangrene and loss of the great toe of his right foot. The condition which causes poor blood circulation, led to non-healing ulcers and severe pain in his lower limbs. Despite multiple hospital visits and procedures like wound debridement and toe amputation, his condition worsened.

A CT angiography revealed significant narrowing in several arteries of his lower limbs, leaving limited options for treatment. On January 11, 2025, a team led by Dr. Sudipto Bhattacharya, Senior Consultant and Head of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, performed stem cell therapy on Mr. Singh’s right leg. The procedure went smoothly. Mr Singh was discharged in a hemodynamically stable condition 2 days later, whereby he could celebrate Lohri with his entire family waiting for him at home.

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a progressive condition that starts with calf pain during walking or running and worsens over time. Left untreated, it can lead to ulcers, loss of toes or limbs, sepsis, and even death. Stem cell therapy, the latest advancement in treating PVD, offers hope to patients by improving blood flow, preventing complications and reducing the need for repeated hospital visits.

Early detection and proper management by skilled specialists are key to combating this condition. Mr. Singh’s story highlights the life-changing impact of advanced medical treatments and the importance of awareness about PVD. Thanks to this intervention, he now has a chance at leading a normal life free from the pain and complications of this disease.

This success marks a significant milestone in Odisha’s healthcare achievements and underscores the potential of stem cell therapy in transforming lives.
