Jaiprakash Hospital & Research Centre: A Year of Excellence in CTVS
Dr. Sudipto Bhattacharya, HOD CTVS Jaiprakash Hospital Rourkela, says, “The last year at Jaiprakash Hospital & Research Centre, Rourkela, has been an amazing experience for us as a CTVS team, performing the entire range of Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgeries. Jaiprakash Hospital Rourkela is backed up by the ever-so-sincere and dedicated Cardiac Anaesthesiologist, Dr. Samrajni Ganguly. Smaller incisions, Fast Track Cardiac Anaesthesia, better peri-operative pain management and early mobilisation not only aided early recovery for every patient, but also ensured that all the cardiac surgery patients went home in 3 days, thoracic surgery patients went home in 2 days, and vascular surgery patients were sent home on the day after surgery. Not just that, all of them returned to work at the earliest, and the follow-up data suggests that all of them have been doing well over the past year”.
The Department of CTVS achieved an enviable 100% success rate in cardiothoracic and vascular surgical patients over the last year. All over India, patients undergoing cardiac surgeries usually have a hospital stay of 7-10 days, if not more. The recovery is often delayed, and outcomes are not as good. The dedicated CTVS team at JPHRC provides round-the-clock care and monitoring, ensuring quality of care, and with the blessings of the Almighty, Lord Jagannath, is the leading centre for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery in Western Odisha for 2025-26.

Patients of various ages have come to Jaiprakash Hospital, Rourkela for surgery. The oldest patient was 90 years old, and he went home the next day after a vascular surgery. The hospital has had patients undergoing heart bypass surgery (CABG) via the off-pump beating heart technique, across an age range of 35 to 85 years. And all have done well. Under the supervision of Dr. Sudipto Bhattacharya, the hospital has done heart valve replacements, and all the patients have gone home 3 days after surgery. Dr. Sudipto Bhattacharya has done a few congenital heart surgeries, thereby repairing holes in the heart, and all of them have gone home in 3 days after surgery.
Jaiprakash Hospital had lots of polytrauma cases over the last year, including multiple gunshot injuries in the chest, bullhorn injury, thereby ripping apart the right chest with both heart and lungs visible from outside, a few chest wall tumour cases and challenging chest wall reconstruction procedures, lung Hydatid and diaphragmatic hernia, all of whom were sent home 2 days after surgery. Use of the palm’s breadth limited lateral thoracotomy, a smaller incision and better peri-operative pain management has aided early recovery.

JP Hospital was the first to do Stem Cell Therapy for peripheral vascular disease in Odisha, and the first case was the second-oldest ever to be operated on in the world. JP Hospital did a large number of such cases, with 5 being done in a single month, the most in the country. All of them went home on the day after surgery. The CTVS department has also done scarless treatment for vascular tumours, including hemangiomas, whereby young male and female patients via Injection sclerotherapy have been treated, one or two sittings in all, whereby their tumours resolved and they were discharged in a day or two and are doing well at follow-up with no reported recurrence. The CTVS department did lots of varicose vein operations via the minimally invasive technique, with multiple small linear incisions, and discharged all patients on the day after surgery.

All of them are doing fine at follow-up. The CTVS department under the guidance of Dr. Sudipto Battacharya has done quite a few limb salvage procedures, repairing peripheral arterial tears, peripheral arterial bypass and doing Fogarty embolectomy to save limbs after road traffic accidents. All of those patients are doing well at follow-up. Here’s hoping that the next year will be just as good and Jaiprakash Hospital can continue to produce such excellent results and outcomes and continue to serve the people of Odisha for the years to come.
